How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT and Google AI?
Cover the basics AI tools read: a complete Google Business Profile with real reviews, the same business details everywhere, and a website that answers customers' questions, with a page per service and area and structured data. Then ask the AI tool yourself in a private, signed-out window, and write down the date: AI answers change from search to search.
Why there’s no trick
AI tools name the businesses they can understand and trust. Google says optimizing for its AI answers “is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” (Google Search Central) So the work is the basics, done well. What is AEO? →
What to do
- Complete your Google Business Profile. Services, service area, hours and real job photos. Google lists an up-to-date profile among the basics for its AI answers. (Google Search Central)
- Ask happy customers for Google reviews. Your own customers, about real jobs. Google gives you a link or QR code to send them. (Google Business Profile Help)
- Keep your details identical everywhere. Search your business name and fix any listing with an old name, phone or address.
- Answer real questions on your website. Write down what customers ask on the phone, and answer each one plainly in the first lines of a page.
- Give each service and area its own page. For the jobs you want more of and the towns you serve, with your own job photos.
- Add structured data. Ask whoever builds your website to add it, matching what each page says.
Check it yourself
Open a private window, signed out. Ask ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode what a customer would: your trade and town, like “roof repair in Riverside CA.” Screenshot the answer and note the date. Ask again next month: AI answers change from search to search. If your customers speak Spanish, ask in Spanish too.
A result, dated
We date our own results the same way. On October 24, 2026, Google AI Mode was asked for a “stone veneer contractor Hemet CA.” It named One Touch Masonry its Top Pick: Stone Veneer Specialists. Read the case study →
Questions
Can ChatGPT see my website?
Not if your website blocks it. OpenAI says sites that block its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Ask whoever runs your website to check.
Do I need to be on Reddit or Quora?
Google says its AI answers can show what's said about products and services across the web, forums included, but that chasing fake mentions isn't as useful as it might seem. Start with your website and Google Business Profile.
What is schema, and do I need it?
Schema, or structured data, is code that spells out your business facts for machines. Google says it isn't required for its AI answers and there's no special kind to add, but it still calls it a good idea for Google Search.
Is this only for big companies?
No. Someone asking an AI tool for a contractor in their town is asking about local businesses. Google says its AI features offer "unique opportunities for more types of sites to appear."
